Looking for anyone who may have info about an emblem I am researching I believe to be the 416th Bomb Group's "Unofficial" design, the emblem is on a "shield" shape , has a Banner across upper part with "Motto" that reads "IGNIS AURUM PROBAT" the design on the shield has flames across the lower part and there is a human arm raised out of them holding a lightning bolt , they were stationed at several overseas bases during ww-2 started otu flying A-20 then converted to A-26 , the bases were Raf Wetherfield, A-55 Melun France,A-69 Laon/Athies France and A-59 Pontoise/Cormielles en Vexin France.

I WAS RECENTLY APPROACHED AT A PARTY BY DR LARRY SMITH, AN OLD ACQUAINTTANCE, WHO ASKED ME TO BUY HIS BOOK. I DECIDED TO RISK TEN DOLLAARS ON A USED COPY. AFTER READING TWO CHAPTERS I CALLED LARRY AND TOLD HIM I LIKED IT; HE WAS PLEASED.
I NEVER WANTED TO BE A PILOT, BUT ENJOY READING ABOUT WWII AVIATION EXPLOITS AND THE PERSONAL HISTORIES OF THOSE INVOLVED.
THE BOOK IS QUITE WELL WRITTEN. THE TITLE, THE INTRODUCTION, AND THE SHORT HISTORY ARE AN

OVERVIEW OF THE BOOK. THE BOOK IS ABOUT THE THE HISTORY OF AN ATTACK BOMBER GROUP. THEIR HISTORY IS INTERWOVER WITH THE TOPIC OF EUGENICS WHICH IS CONSIDERED FROM ALL SIDES AS WELL AS THE GERMANS.
I HAVE VISITED MANY OF THE FRENCH WAR SITES BY BIKE AND GERMAN SITES BY CAR. A MAP IS USFUL HELP WHILE READING THE BOOK.
THE BOOK IS A TAD LONG, BUT WISH HAD PURCHASED A NEW COPY AS THE PHOTOS WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER REPRODUCED. CONGRATULATIONS LARRY ON AN EXCELLENT CONTRIBUTION, WELL RESEARCHED, AND A SPECIAL ADDITION TO MY LIBRARY.

Dr Smith,I just got your book Darwin's War. My father Ross H. Cornell was a pilot in the 416th. His plane was shot down 3-18-1945, 65 years ago to the day almost. How fitting that your book would arrive at this time. Your description of his experience that day over Worms is amazingly close to all the accounts I heard from him over the years, especially considering that you never had a chance to speak with him. He died in 2002. I am looking foreward to reading the entire book. Thank you for so accurately preserving these significant events of WWII which were also major events in my fathers life. Stephen Ross Cornell

Hello,
I'm trying to trace as much information as possible on the two aircraft depicted bombing the marshalling yards. Perhaps even the crew! They are from the 671st squadron. The reason I am interested is that my house (La Bretonnière) appears towards the top left corner of the photograph. The marshalling yards were at Domfront(Gare)in Lower Normandy. We had to vacate our house, briefly, two weeks after we moved in in March 2004, because an unexploded 500lb bomb was unearthed across the road. It was successfully diffused. Two more bombs remain buried in the garden of our neighbour's (across the bend in the road were the railway line crosses) and will not be removed.
Please, send me any info you have related to the aircraft, the missions flown, the pilots names etc.
Many thanks for your help in advance.
